Feeling far from God can be frightening, especially when you still believe.
You may still pray, go to church, read Scripture, or want to trust Him, but your heart feels dry. The songs do not land the way they used to. Prayer feels thin. You may wonder whether God has moved away, whether you have failed Him, or whether this quiet season means your faith is weaker than it should be.
Scripture gives room for that honest ache. The Bible does not shame people for longing, waiting, or asking, "How long?" It teaches us to bring spiritual dryness to God, not hide it from Him.
If you feel far from God today, begin here: distance in your feelings is not the same as abandonment by God.
Psalms 42:11 "Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why the unease within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise Him, my Savior and my God."
Psalm 42 does not sound like a polished religious performance. It sounds like someone talking to a troubled soul and choosing hope while the trouble is still present.
That matters when God feels distant. The psalmist does not pretend his soul is calm. He names the downcast feeling, then points his heart back toward God: "Put your hope in God." Sometimes faith begins there, with one honest sentence turned toward the Lord.
A Short Prayer When God Feels Far Away
Lord, I feel far from You.
I do not want to pretend that my heart is full when it feels dry. I do not want to hide my confusion, my numbness, or the quiet fear that I have somehow drifted beyond Your care.
Please meet me here. Teach me to hope in You again, even if my feelings are slow to follow. Draw my heart back to Your presence, Your mercy, and Your word.
I come to You with the faith I have, not the faith I wish I had. Help me pray honestly. Help me wait without despair. Help me remember that You are still my Savior and my God. Amen.
The Bible Gives Words For Spiritual Dryness
Some seasons of faith feel warm and clear. Other seasons feel like waiting in silence. Psalm 13 gives language for that kind of prayer:
Psalms 13:1-2 "1 How long, O LORD? Will You forget me forever? How long will You hide Your face from me? 2 How long must I wrestle in my soul, with sorrow in my heart each day? How long will my enemy dominate me?"
Those questions are in Scripture. That means God is not surprised by them.
Psalm 13 does not give us permission to accuse God carelessly, but it does show that honest lament can still be faithful prayer. When David asks, "How long?" he is not walking away from God. He is bringing the ache to God.
If your prayer is only, "Lord, where are You?" that can still be prayer.
Draw Near One Small Step At A Time
James gives a simple invitation:
James 4:8 "Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded."
This verse is not a command to manufacture a spiritual feeling. It is an invitation to turn toward God with honesty, repentance, and a willing heart.
Drawing near may look small today. It may be opening one psalm. It may be praying for two minutes. It may be confessing a sin you have avoided naming. It may be asking a trusted believer to pray with you. It may be returning to worship even when you feel emotionally flat.
Do not despise the small step. God often meets us through ordinary faithfulness.
Your Feelings Are Not The Measure Of God's Love
When you feel far from God, it is easy to treat your emotions like the final evidence. If you feel close, God must be near. If you feel dry, God must be far away.
But Scripture roots our security in something stronger than our inner weather:
Romans 8:38-39 "38 For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor principalities, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, 39 neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord."
Paul does not say nothing will ever feel painful, confusing, or lonely. He says nothing in creation can separate God's people from His love in Christ Jesus.
That is a steady truth for dry seasons. Your feelings matter, but they are not Lord. The love of God in Christ is deeper than your strongest day and steadier than your weakest one.
Come Back Without Fear
If feeling far from God is connected to sin, avoidance, or a season of drifting, do not let shame keep you away. The way back is not pretending you never wandered. The way back is coming honestly to the God of grace.
Hebrews says:
Hebrews 4:16 "Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need."
Notice what we are invited to receive: mercy and grace. Not contempt. Not rejection. Mercy and grace.
Jesus also says:
John 6:37 "Everyone the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I will never drive away."
That promise is gentle enough for a weary believer. Come back with confession if confession is needed. Come back with tears if tears are all you have. Come back quietly if you do not know what else to say.
Christ does not drive away the one who comes to Him.
A Longer Prayer For When You Feel Spiritually Dry
Father,
I miss feeling close to You. I miss the ease of prayer, the comfort of Scripture, and the sense that my heart is awake to Your presence.
I bring You the dryness I cannot fix by myself. If there is sin I need to confess, please show me with mercy and lead me into repentance. If I am tired, help me receive rest. If grief, stress, disappointment, or fear has made my heart quiet, please meet me with patience.
Teach me to draw near again. Give me one small faithful step today. Help me open Your word without pressure. Help me pray without performing. Help me trust Your love in Christ more than I trust the rise and fall of my feelings.
Thank You that nothing can separate Your people from Your love in Christ Jesus. Thank You that Your throne is a throne of grace. Thank You that Jesus does not drive away the one who comes to Him.
Put hope back into my downcast soul. I will yet praise You, my Savior and my God. Amen.
What To Do When Prayer Feels Empty
When prayer feels empty, make it smaller and more honest.
Try one of these simple prayers:
- Lord, I feel far from You; help me turn toward You.
- Put hope back into my downcast soul.
- Show me one small step of obedience today.
- Give me mercy and grace in this time of need.
- Help me trust Your love more than my feelings.
You can also read one psalm slowly. Psalm 42, Psalm 13, Psalm 23, Psalm 46, or Psalm 63 can help give words to longing, fear, trust, and hope.
If this distance is connected to depression, trauma, abuse, self-harm, or the feeling that you cannot stay safe, please reach out to a trusted person, pastor, counselor, doctor, or local emergency support. Spiritual dryness can have many layers, and you do not have to carry them alone.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is it normal for Christians to feel far from God?
Many believers experience seasons when prayer feels dry or God's presence feels less obvious. The Psalms give language for longing, waiting, and asking God for help. Feeling distant should lead us to honest prayer, not panic or hiding.
What should I pray when God feels far away?
Start simply: "Lord, I feel far from You. Help me draw near again." Psalm 42:11 is a helpful anchor because it teaches the downcast soul to hope in God.
Does feeling far from God mean He has left me?
Not necessarily. Feelings can be affected by tiredness, grief, stress, sin, disappointment, or suffering. Romans 8:38-39 teaches that nothing in creation can separate God's people from the love of God in Christ Jesus.
How do I come back to God after drifting?
Come honestly. Confess what needs confession, receive mercy, and take one small step toward God. Hebrews 4:16 invites us to approach the throne of grace to receive mercy and find grace in our time of need.
Feeling far from God is not the same as being abandoned by God. Bring Him the dryness honestly, and ask for grace to take one small step back toward hope.
